The King George IV Inn

Offering a warm welcome, good food and accommodation in Eskdale

  • King George IV Inn, Eskdale, Cumbria Explore the Eskdale Valley from our doorstep
  • Stream in Eskdale, Cumbria Situated in a tranquil part of the Lake District
  • Eskdale Valley, Cumbria The inn boasts an open fire and a slate flagged floor

We are a traditional Inn dating back to the 15th century, where our aim is to provide our customers with a warm and friendly service and atmosphere. Where local really means local, from the owner and staff, to the locally sourced great real ales and produce.

We are both dog and child friendly and have a range of eating areas such as the bar, where you can enjoy the cosy log fire and a craic [chat] with the locals; the restaurant, with lovely views of Brantrake Crags, Cropple How, Raven Crag and Latter Barrow, or outside in the beer garden (if the weather's right!) where you can look out for The La'al Ratty, the miniature steam railway. There is also a Games room to keep the kids entertained and lots of info on where to go and visit on your holidays. The King also offers recently refurbished self-catering accommodation with all the mod-cons. These sleep from a range of 2 to 8 people. As well as our self-catering accommodation we have two double en-suite letting rooms in the inn.

At The King George we offer a range of high quality meals as well as pub grub. Our chefs make as much as they can on the premises including our popular steak & ale pie and smoked haddock fishcakes. We try to keep the food miles down by sourcing many of our produce locally including Cumberland sausage from Bewley's of Bootle, Taw House Beef-Sunday Roast and King George burger other suppliers include Wilson's of Egremont and Donan's fish of Whitehaven.

Again, as with the food we try our best to supply many of our real ales from local northern breweries, and through the busy periods frequently having up to nine on at any one time means that there's a wide selection from lights, to mild's and stouts. With over 150 different real ales in the area, our nine hand pulls change daily. Our nearest breweries are Strands Brewery in Nether Wasdale, with great beers such as Red Screes and Errmmm..., then Great Gable, (their Wastwater Gold is lush), and then there is Yates Brewery, Ulverston, Coniston and Foxfield Brewery to name just a few. Plus our Guest ales from Moorhouses Brewery in Burnley, Bank Top Brewery in Bolton, Prospect Brewery in Wigan, and Partners in Dewsbury. We're not "best inn the west" for nowt. As well as our selection of real ales we also boast a wide selection of wines sold by the bottle or glass, over 100 single and highland malt whiskies and a variety of soft drinks and juices for children and drivers.

If real ale is your thing, then come to The King!

Local Area

The Eskdale Valley

The Eskdale Valley in West Lakeland is a beautiful and tranquil base for exploring this area of The Lake District. It's location ensures there is far less traffic than most areas of The Lake District, particularly the main tourist areas.

Walking & Cycling

The Eskdale Valley provides a vast choice of walks to suit all ages and fitness levels.

For those seeking more of a challenge the same places can be reached by climbing up onto Eskdale Fell via the Outward Bound centre or Fisherground farm, passing Blea Tarn and then descending into Boot. Serious hikers can forgo the car journey to Wasdale and set off across Sca Fell to climb Scafell Pike (England's highest mountain).

The Eskdale Trail

The Eskdale Trail is a 14km route from Dalegarth Visitor Centre (just outside Boot) to Ravenglass via Muncaster Fell and Castle. It can be walked or cycled and cycles can be hired by the day or half day at Dalegarth.

Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway

This narrow gauge railway, known as La'al Ratty, runs from Dalegarth Visitor Centre, just outside Boot, to the seaside village of Ravenglass. Kids of all ages will love a ride on this train. As Ravenglass is also a main line station it is actually easier for visitors by train to reach Eskdale than many places in The Lake District.

Muncaster Castle

Muncaster Castle sits on the main A595 coast road and can be reached by car, train, bike or even on foot from Eskdale.

The castle has extensive gardens and woodland walks containing many rare plants and trees and one of the largest collections of rhododendrons in Europe.

Stanley Ghyll Force

Stanley Ghyll Force is a 60ft waterfall situated in a narrow ravine on the southern side of the Eskdale valley. The waterfall can be reached from the King George via the woodland walk that follows the River Esk upstream. Alternatively you can park at Dalegarth Visitor Centre and walk from there.

Hardknott Roman Fort, Hardknott Pass, Eskdale

Hardknott Roman fort was built in the 2nd century AD and is situated part way up Hardknott Pass on the Eskdale side. It can be reached from a small carparking area on the road running up the pass.
